Saving Some Forests
Here's the video of my game. There's still some minor tweeks in the cutscenes to sort out but that's easy to do before the exhibition.
Here's the video of my game. There's still some minor tweeks in the cutscenes to sort out but that's easy to do before the exhibition.
Here's the floor plan I've come up with
I've kept to my original plan of having app and other smaller projects upstairs, while more largescale or physical projects are downstairs. Sedat said he was going to have some sort of crash mat to go with his fitness app so I've put him out of the way so it doesnt get in the way of people walking round or anyone elses projects. It's sort of the same with Rob's project, if people hopefully people using his project will stay in that area and wont get in the way. I've also tried to keep people who are friendly with each other in the same space, so they wont wander off to each other and not keep an eye on people trying to use their project.I've posted this up on the facebook group
Seems like everyones happy
Before I had a simple menu where you had to click on a square to start the game, obviously this isnt very user friendly since people wont know what to do, let alone that they have to press A. So I've made it a bit simpler. Instead I've got it so all you have to do is press the A button.
I've also made a menu screen which tells you to press A and looks a lot better than the old version. I've made it so its the starting frame of the first cutscene, so its a nice transition into that.
I've now finished the final cut scenes. I'll do a screen recording of the complete game soon, where you can see them properlly.
At the start you see a convoy of deforestation machines rolling through the forest knocking down trees, then you see the girl looking over at the ruined land, she then travels to a giant tree and kneels down near it waking up the forest spirit.
At the end it's kind of the opposite of the first. You see the deforestation machines leaving the forest, being chased out by the guardians you woke up. As the guardians move through the forest the trees grow back.
A while ago I sent all the site files to Matt so he could put in the missing images and text, a couple of days ago he finished doing this and sent it back to me. The original plan was to have photos of people on their section on the site, but we realised it's going to be far less hassle if we just ask for an image of their project. He posted on the facebook group asking for images, and I think we got about 2.
I've added in a twitter feed and changed the positioning of the sprites on the contact page.
For the twitter feed I used http://tweet.seaofclouds.com/ I've used it before and it's a really simple way of adding in a customizable twitter feed.I noticed a couple of things that I had to change while finishing off the site. I had to move the next buttons across a little on the people sections, since people with long abstracts would overlap the button.
Some of the sprites looked like they had been saved as a jpg then cut out horribly so I had to remake a couple of these
and finally I had to play content editor since a few of the abstracts had typos, were formatted weird or had incomplete sentances. I might not have caught all of these, since I don't have the best grammar or spelling.
But anyway, the site is now live *fanfare music* http://immerse2012.co.uk/
I've added in reseting into my game. I've needed to do this for a while, in the exhibition if someone stops playing halfway through i need a way to reset it from the wiimote instead of having to stop and start the whole thing.
I've done this by checking if the home button is being pressed constantly in the main as file, then i have an if statement for each level, checking if that level is active, if it is it'll run the destroy function and load up the level.
After doing this I stress tested it for a while by playing through it and reseting for a few hours, amazingly no problems came up.
I've added a bit of a tutorial to my game, the first two levels show you the controls, and introduce you into moving objects, and drawing blocks. It also tells you the story a bit and what your role is in the game. I've done this by just using some speech bubbles with text, and some diagrams which show how to use the Wiimote.
I've also added in hints to the game, so if players get stuck they get a clue about what to do. I didn’t want to use a hint button because usually if there’s one people rely too heavily on it. So this way, people will get a hint if they actually need it. I've done these in a sort of Machinarium way, I thought bubble appears with a sketch of the solved puzzle on it. Here’s all the hints:
I've added these to the girl movie clip on each level, I have a timer function which causes the girl movie clip to go to the frame with the hint on it after a minute.May 03
For freebies at the exhibition I've decided to give out some papercraft, I've seen a lot of models called cubees recently so I've made some of those. I found this site which gives you the basic template which I've used to make them. http://www.cubeecraft.com/
The models themselves are the guardians from the temples, I started off with the template that shows how they’ll look after being made up.
The diver was pretty easy to do, it’s pretty much the same as how it looks in the game, but boxier. The robot and the dragon were a little trickier. The robot was difficult because in the game it’s such a simplistic design, so to make it less boring I've just added some cogs to its stomach. The dragon was difficult because in the game it’s quite different from the made up model, so I've just made a more cartoony anthropomorphic dragon.
The main selling point of these cubees is that you don’t have to use any tape or glue to make them, you just slot the pieces of card together. The diver and robot were fine since it just uses the template with nothing added to them, but the dragon has added bits. For those I figure have it so they can fold so a graphic is on each side so you don’t get any plain white bits. I had to scale down the wings from the original design, just so I wouldn’t have any problems with the dragon toppling over. As for the snout I've just extended the head section slightly and then it just clips onto the front of the face.
Here’s how they look put together
I still need to tweak the dragon slightly, and I need to add things to the template such as instructions and an image of the finished model.
I did some user testing today, I started out by telling them the basic controls since I havent put in a tutorial yet.
I mainly wanted to see if my levels were too hard and if I needed to put a hint system in, the short answer is yes I need a hints system. The cursor hover states helped a lot, but for some levels, like the pipe they just got really stuck.
I'm not a fan of hint systems, but it looks like I'm going to have to put one in.
The other problem was that they were confused by the story, but thats fine some of the cutscenes arent in yet which tell most of the story, the guardian cutscenes definately need to be extended though.
The positive is that they really liked the look of the game.
I realised that I havent posted any footage of my game in action for a while, so here's a video showing you where it's at right now.
